On October 23, FUGA celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a birthday twist on its iconic ADE party. Colleagues, clients and partners came together to celebrate a journey that began in Amsterdam in 2006.
What began as distribution infrastructure has grown into a global, full-service music distribution company. FUGA powers leading labels and distributors in more than 50 countries, connecting their music with global audiences. Its analytics and royalty tools help clients understand performance, guide decisions and build sustainable businesses.
Martijn Meijer, often referred to as FUGA’s employee #2, remembers the meetings Pieter van Rijn held with the team of 10 when he joined as CEO over a decade ago. Without coordinating, everyone made the same request: we need to move offices. Within three months, they were on the Prinsengracht.
The former piano factory became home to a growing company, an international team and a collective determination to help shape the future of independent music distribution.
“We couldn’t have imagined the scale of what we’d achieve together. We’ve kept building on the foundations we laid back then, listening to our clients and finding new ways to help them grow.” Christiaan Kröner
Since 2006, progress has taken many forms: establishing early DSP partnerships, securing FUGA’s first marketing banners, developing royalty accounting tools, expanding analytics tools and rights management capabilities, and delivering immersive audio.
Clients have been part of that work, too. More than 200 joined FUGA’s testing community, sharing their time, experience and feedback to help shape new tools. The twentieth anniversary offers a unique chance to reflect on the milestones that have quietly become part of everyday business for FUGA and its clients.
“What stands out to me is the shared excitement behind each milestone. Whether it was a client wanting to work with us, a new DSP opportunity or a challenge to figure out together, there was a shared excitement about being part of it. We didn’t take those things for granted. And when we got it right, even something small, we took real pride in the work and in each other. That’s something I hope we always hold on to.” Joost Calis
FUGA’s culture has been shaped by small moments of connection. Birthdays brought the “awkward singing moment”: colleagues quietly gathering around someone’s desk before breaking into song.
International expansion and becoming part of Downtown Music in 2020 changed the scale of the business, but colleagues still describe the same sense of belonging.
“The team has grown enormously since I joined. We’re now in over 20 countries, but that sense of the ‘FUGA family’ has stayed with us. It’s the people and the relationships we’ve built that make it feel like home.” Liz Northeast
The anniversary marks the beginning of FUGA 20, a series sharing stories from the colleagues, clients and partners who have shaped the company over the past two decades. Their reflections celebrate the progress made together, recognising the people who built FUGA and those who trusted it with their ambitions.
As FUGA enters its third decade as part of Virgin Music Group, that shared commitment continues to drive its purpose: giving independent music businesses the tools, knowledge and support to grow on their own terms.
