There’s a version of music marketing that goes: drop the single, post the content, chase the streams. It works, sort of. But it rarely builds the kind of excitement that lasts.

The artists who break through and have fans that show up over a long time are up to something else. They’re creating space for their fans to belong to, identify with, and make their own. They’re world building.

World building is the difference between chasing an audience and growing a community. Think of Rosalía’s aesthetic: the leather, the motorbike imagery, the red and black of MOTOMAMI. All of that was intentional. It gave fans a visual language they could adopt, replicate, and build on. Now, whenever someone sees a motorbike, a certain kind of fan thinks of her. That’s world building.
